A shellfish, sea mussel derives its name from the Latin for “little mouse,” a reference to its shape, not its flavor. This seafood is relatively low in calories and rich in protein and fat. The protein is an aid to growth, to the production of energy, to the proper formation of all bodily tissues including muscles, hair, skin, and fingernails and to the body’s production of hormones, enzymes, hemoglobin, and antibodies. The fat may prove an aid in the body’s absorption of calcium and of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as being a possible source of energy and an aid to feeling well fed and unhungry for a longer time invaluable for dieters. There are no statistics on the amount of cholesterol in mussels, but like most shellfish they are probably rather high, and thus to be avoided by those with cholesterol problems. Mussels are a very good source of calcium, vital to the proper functioning of muscles, nerves, and heart, to the formation of healthy bones and teeth, and an aid against nervousness and insomnia. Mussels are also o good source of B-1, an aid to growth, digestion, and normal functioning of the muscles, nerves, and heart: and of B-2, necessary for growth and general health, and an essential part of many enzymes, being especially important in the health of the eyes, skin, and mouth. Like most shellfish, mussels are also a good source of trace minerals, especially zinc, essential to the formation of all cells, for protein metabolism, and for the action of many enzymes,
