Fresh cranberries are high in roughage and low in calories. The fresh fruit may prove useful in controlling diarrhea and is reputed to be valuable against fever and gout. The fresh berries are good sources of potassium, needed for production of energy in the body, and of sulphur, an aid to healthy hair, skin, and nails. Cranberry sauce provides far less nutrients than do fresh cranberries, because of the large amounts of sugar used in processing, the sauce is high in both calories and carbohydrates.
