Fresh Clams

Fresh Clams

2 oz fresh clams (uncooked, meat and liquid) contains:

30 cal; 4.6 gm protein (complete);
.5 gm fat;
1.4 gm carbohydrate;
112 mg phosphorus.

This shellfish, whether eaten raw, baked, in chowder, or in other dishes, is a good low calorie source of protein, with a minimum of fats and carbohydrates. However, fresh clams are about twice as high in cholesterol as are lean red meats, so they are not recommended for those with atherosclerosis or high cholesterol levels. As a shellfish, fresh clams are one of the few reliable sources of the trace mineral zinc, which is needed for growth and for proper formation of cells, and is especially important for fertility and for the development of  the sperm.
