Most crackers are high in calories carbohydrates, and sodium, thus on the “not recommended” list for those with high blood pressure or weight or heart problems. Although they do contain some protein, they are often made from refined white flour and thus lack a high degree of nutritional value. Whole wheat and graham crackers are more nutritious than saltines. Whole wheat, graham, and saltine crackers are all low in fat, however, and so are better than junk food snacks for those concerned about cholesterol. Used as the underpinnings for unhydrogenated peanut butter or an unprocessed cheese, crackers may be better than less nutritious snacks. But try putting cracker spreads on slices of fresh fruit or vegetables experiment a bit, and you may find a more interesting, as well as more nutritional, alternative.
