Lemon citrus fruit
Renowned for their content of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), lemon citrus fruits are also rich in magnesium, which aids in lowering blood cholesterol levels, promoting the body’s synthesis of protein and its utilization of fats and carbohydrates; in potassium which is essential for proper muscle tone, especially of the heart muscles, and is needed by the body in order to change glucose to energy and acts as an aid against high blood pressure, low blood sugar, and water retention; in carotene which in the body changes to vitamin A, necessary for healthy skin and as an aid in reducing fat and cholesterol levels in the blood; in natural sugar, which is tranformed to energy within the body, and is important in preventing acidosis; and in traces of several minerals necessary for growth and for normal bone development. The pulp and the white part of the rind of lemon citrus fruits contain bioflavonoids, which work with vitamin C in helping to combat scurvy, the common cold, many types of allergies, and to promote healing. Since Vitamin C is destroyed by cooking and cannot be stored by the body, raw lemon citrus fruits and juices are one of the most reliable natural sources of vitamin C. Because lemon citrus fruits are such a rich source of necessary vitamins and minerals, most diets recommend that some form of citrus juice or fruit (not necessarily just lemon citrus fruit) be taken at every breakfast, and luckily this is one good health habit that most Americans have adopted. While citrus fruits are recommended or almost everyone, they should be avoided by those with arthritis, since they tend to aggravate the condition. However, vitamin C is necessary for those with arthritis, and so anyone with this problem should obtain some other source of vitamin C. The basic recommended daily dosage of vitamin C ranges from 60 mg to 80 mg, depending on bodily requirements for growth and maintenance of health; if colds or infections are present, how ever, it is well to greatly increase this amount 3000 mg daily have been taken with no apparent ill effects.
