One of the more damaging of American eating habits is the mid afternoon candy pick me up, used to get over an energy slump. But energy slumps are often grounded in low blood sugar, which refined carbohydrates, taken without other nutrients, only make worse. Another problem is that most candies leave a sugar residue on the teeth, nourishing bacteria responsible for tooth decay. And candy does no good for weight or cholesterol problems, either. Hard candies are perhaps the least damaging in this respect. However, there is some benefit to be gained from certain selected candies. Old fashioned licorice, for example, acts as a relaxant and may be good for insomnia. And some physicians have recommended large amounts of jelly beans, gumdrops, or marshmallows to patients for the evening before surgery; these fat free candies provide glycogen to the body, which can be stored to help avert the acidosis reaction that can often follow surgery. But in general, more nutritious pick me ups will be much more beneficial, both for immediate energy and for long range value.
