The body degenerates only as it becomes no longer able to cope with the rising tide of its own debris, i.e., with acid ‘end-products’ of incorrect feeding and of mental emotional conflicts. It can cope quite well with the normal day-by-day end-products of its own metabolism. These abnormal acid ‘end-products’ develop and accumulate in the blood as a result of eating not only the wrong foods but also of eating wrong combinations of even the right foods, because (as already explained in previous pages some of these are incompatible with each other.

We should therefore learn not only to eat the right foods but to eat those of them that are incompatible at different mealtimes. To do this, we can continue to eat exactly the same foods (provided, of course, that they are natural `whole’ foods), combining them differently, that is all. This different combining involves simply a re-arrangement of the daily menus, so that no starches and sugars are eaten the same time as proteins, and no acid fruits are eaten with starch and sugar foods.

If meals are planned with the idea of avoiding such compatibles, the alkaline balance of the blood will be maintained, excess acid will not be produced, and body weight will become normal, with a feeling of well-being and clearness of brain.

Thinness and obesity are both conditions which are result of abnormal states of body-chemistry. These abnormal states are due to retention of the acid end-products of digestion which poison the blood, and the poisoned blood, flowing through the glands, upsets the delicate balance of the glandular secretions which control body weight.

The brain, also, nourished by acid-laden blood, gets befuddled that clear thinking is impeded. Memory, reasoning power, power to concentrate — all these suffer when the blood is overloaded with extra-normal acid ‘end-products’. Put this to the test by living for a day or two on fresh ripe fruits, and drinks of boiled water, and note the resulting clarity of brain. Not only will your brain be clearer, but your whole body will benefit. You will feel rejuvenated, years younger and pounds lighter, as if you had thrown off a heavy load — a load of debris — as, indeed, you have, provided your bowels have emptied themselves properly. To ensure that they do so and that your system has a thorough cleansing, take an early morning dose of 2 tea-spoonsful of Epsom salts in hot water before commencing the fast.

A short fast, combined with a bowel wash-out or an Epsom salts purge, is a cure for most minor (and some major ) ailments. A longer fast, carried out under the supervision of a qualified naturopath, may be necessary for some major illnesses.

In normal health, the bowels can be kept in good working order by eating whole wheat bread, some ‘roughage’ in the form of fruits and vegetables, a spoonful or two of crude black molasses or black treacle, a cup of bran-tea sweetened in with honey, and by avoiding white bread and white flour products, white sugar, and white sugar products.

Over-long retention of food-residue in the bowel (especially the residues of flesh foods) sets up putrefaction (a ‘going-rotten’ process), and this causes self-poisoning (toxemia) unless bowel action is very efficient and takes place two or three times daily. Toxemia can be reduced by eating less flesh foods (meat, fish, poultry, etc.), replacing them with soy flour, nuts and seeds of all kinds (including millet seed, sunflower seeds, sesame seed, etc.), eggs, lentils and lentil flour, pea flour, wheat germ cereal, and brewer’s yeast. Garlic discourages the growth of putrefactive bacteria. It encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria.
