Natural vitamins and minerals
All freshly-gathered fruit, vegetables, grains, and nuts, contain natural vitamins and minerals, so that, if we include them in our daily diet (preferably eaten raw), we need fear no vitamin or mineral shortage.
The amount of natural vitamins and minerals in them depends of course, entirely upon the soil in which they have been grown; artificial fertilizers are not nearly so productive of ‘quality’ foods as natural organic fertilizers such as compost and manure.
Unfortunately most present-day commercial growers use artificial fertilizers because they are easier to get and quicker to use than natural compost and manure. They produce quantity and size, but the products fed with them lack taste and quality – this is because they lack vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Commercial growers also use poisonous sprays, insecticides, and weed-killers on growing crops. These are harmful to the soil and to the people who eat the crops.
It is, however, possible to obtain compost-grown, unsprayed fruit, vegetables, and cereals. Some health foods shops stock them. If you can’t find any, why not be independent and grow them yourself?
If you have no garden you cannot do so, but if you have even a few square yards of soil or lawn, you would be wise to turn it into a vegetable plot and grow just enough of everything for your own use, fertilizing it with home-made compost, bone-meal, ‘Maxicrop’ (seaweed) and rainwater (this is much better than tap water).
You would then have fruit and vegetables, free from harmful chemicals, that have been grown in rich solid and are full of vitamins and all the essential minerals and trace elements; moreover, they would be fresh and still alive when you get them. Vegetables from shops are nearly always a day old (or more) when you get them, and, in consequence, have lost much of their vitamin content.
It is a pity to kill the vitamins and enzymes in vegetables by cooking them.
Why not invest in a juice-press?
It lasts a lifetime, and the benefit your health would derive from the use of it would be worth a good deal more to you than the price you pay for it. Raw vegetable juices, extracted from vegetables grown on naturally fertilized soil, are invaluable to health, and are the best food and medicine in illness. Also make your own bread and cakes, so that you can get the benefit of the vitamins, minerals, etc. in wholewheat flour made from English wholewheat grain, grown on composted land.
Such flour is obtainable at health foods shops everywhere – in some towns, it can be obtained from local grocers. Use only brown (Barbados) sugar instead of white denatured sugar (which has been so refined that it has lost all its vitamins and minerals), and supplement with honey, molasses, and black treacle. Also, make your own marmalade, using Barbados sugar. This ‘set’s just as well as white sugar.
